Machine-side and light industrial: where service robots earn their keep
UK manufacturers rarely lack automation ambition — they lack people for the repetitive work around the machines. Fixed automation already handles high-volume, high-precision work well. The gap is the flexible middle: machine-side monitoring through unstaffed hours, moving parts and totes between cells, visual checks on output, packing support at peak, and stock verification that never quite gets done. These are exactly the tasks emerging humanoid and mobile platforms are starting to handle, because they need mobility and adaptability rather than production-line speed.
The commercial logic is usually shift-shaped: a task that is manageable on days but unstaffed on nights, or a role that has been advertised twice without a credible applicant. If a repeatable task is going undone or pulling skilled operators away from machines, it is a candidate.
Running a pilot without disrupting production
The first rule of a manufacturing pilot is that production comes first. A well-designed trial runs alongside your existing lines, not inside them: the robot works a defined area with agreed boundaries, supervision is planned with your health and safety lead, and the pilot can be paused at any moment without touching output. We deliberately scope first pilots to stand alone — no MES or ERP integration on day one — so the question being tested is simple: can this platform do this task, reliably, in this environment, around these people?

Humanoid, quadruped or AMR — which fits a factory?
It depends on the task, and a manufacturer-agnostic view matters here. Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) remain the right answer for high-volume, repeatable material movement on flat floors. Quadrupeds suit inspection and monitoring across mixed terrain, stairs and tight plant rooms. Humanoids are the emerging option where the environment and tooling are built for human form — door handles, trolleys, existing workbenches — and changing the infrastructure would cost more than the robot. A short scoping exercise against your actual task usually settles the platform question quickly.

Can a robot cover unstaffed night shifts in a factory?
Monitoring-style tasks — machine-side checks, patrol rounds, environmental observation — are realistic early night-shift uses under remote supervision arrangements. Full unsupervised production work is not a credible first step; treat any such claim with caution.
Do we need safety caging like a traditional industrial robot?
Mobile service robots are risk-assessed differently from fixed industrial arms: instead of guarding, the assessment covers speed limits, exclusion zones, supervision and behaviour around people and vehicles. Every pilot we scope starts from your existing risk-assessment process, not around it.
Will a pilot need integration with our MES or ERP systems?
Not for a first pilot — and it is usually a mistake to try. Prove the physical task first with the robot operating standalone. Integration is a scale-up decision once the platform has earned it.
What does a manufacturing robot pilot cost?
It varies with platform and duration, which is why scoping comes first. Entry-level platforms make useful trials surprisingly accessible, and grant or innovation funding can sometimes contribute — we help assess that honestly, without guaranteeing funding.
