The café where none of the waiters are in the building
At the Dawn Avatar Robot Café in Nihonbashi, Tokyo — a permanent venue since June 2021, after several pop-up trials — the robots gliding between tables are not autonomous. Each OriHime-D robot, about 120cm tall with a camera, microphone and speaker, is driven live by a human "pilot" working from home. Around seventy pilots staff the café remotely; most are housebound or bed-bound through conditions such as ALS (motor neurone disease) and spinal muscular atrophy.
The control methods are the striking part. Pilots drive the robots from a smartphone or computer, and those who cannot use their hands operate everything — movement, speech, taking orders, chatting with customers — through eye-tracking alone. A customer at Dawn is served by a robot, but they are talking to a person: the pilot’s own voice, personality and conversation, projected through the machine.
How avatar work actually functions
The mechanics are a straightforward teleoperation loop: the pilot’s commands travel to the robot over the internet, and live video and audio stream back, so the pilot sees and hears the café in real time from home. The workload is deliberately adjustable — shifts and task intensity are matched to what each pilot can sustain, which is a large part of why the model works for people whose conditions vary day to day.
This is employment, not a stunt
It would be easy to dismiss a robot café as a novelty. The evidence says otherwise. The operator, Ory Laboratory, runs Dawn explicitly as an employment programme: pilots are paid staff, and the café has become a proving ground that has led to around thirty job placements with major employers — including NTT, which runs avatar-robot roles for workers with disabilities, and Microsoft. The underlying model, "avatar work", has been studied in peer-reviewed research, including verification studies of home-based avatar employment and a 2024 CHI paper on how pilots build identity and connection through their robots.
Five years of continuous operation, measurable job outcomes and an academic evidence base: by the standards of service robotics, avatar work is one of the better-proven deployment models anywhere in the world.
Robots giving people jobs — the story nobody expected
The public conversation about robots and work runs almost entirely one way: machines arrive, people go. Dawn demonstrates the counter-case with unusual clarity. For its pilots, the robot is not a competitor for a job — it is the only means of holding one. A person who cannot leave their bed can wait tables, serve customers and hold a workplace conversation because a machine lends them presence somewhere else.
That reframing matters for every employer weighing automation. A remotely operated robot is not a replacement for a worker; it is a new place a worker can be. The labour shortage conversation and the disability employment conversation turn out to be the same conversation, approached from opposite ends.
Could it work in the UK?
The ingredients exist here. The UK has a large pool of people whose skills are locked out of the workplace by mobility, health or caring responsibilities, persistent vacancies in customer-facing and monitoring roles, and an official push in this direction: Innovate UK’s Robotics Industry Showcase 2026 explicitly highlights remote-operation roles for people with disabilities or care responsibilities as an opportunity for UK robotics. Support mechanisms such as Access to Work already fund workplace adaptations, and remote operation is, at heart, a workplace adaptation.
The honest caveats: nobody has run a Dawn-scale programme in the UK yet, so a UK deployment would be genuinely early; it needs reliable low-latency connectivity, proper employment support around the pilots, and tasks chosen to suit remote operation — front-of-house service, reception and greeting, monitoring and inspection are the natural starting points, not heavy or safety-critical work. As with any robotics adoption, the sensible route is a demonstration first, then a small supervised pilot with success measures agreed before anything scales.
