What a quadruped robot actually costs to run in the UK: every line, and the ones the brochure leaves out

The price of a quadruped robot is the easiest number to find and the least useful one. Only one maker publishes list prices, none publishes UK pricing for the industrial class, and the robot is routinely the smaller part of what a working patrol or inspection costs once the payload, the dock, the software, the people and the compliance are added. This guide sets out every cost line over the life of a deployment, quotes the figures the makers actually publish, and gives a structure for working out cost per patrol on your own site. Forge Robotics works across manufacturers and never quotes a figure it cannot attribute.

How much does a robot dog cost in the UK?

Only Unitree publishes list prices, and only for the consumer and education class: US$1,600 for the Go2 Air, US$2,800 for the Go2 Pro and US$4,500 for the Go2 X, excluding tax and freight, with the EDU on request (unitree.com list prices, read on 22 September 2026). The industrial class, Unitree B2, DEEP Robotics X30, Boston Dynamics Spot and ANYbotics ANYmal, and the wheel-legged DEEP Robotics Lynx M20, are quoted per project, and none of their makers publishes a UK price. Any sterling figure you see for those platforms is a reseller’s or a quotation’s, not the manufacturer’s, and it should be read with its scope beside it.

Two things happen to a published dollar price before it is a UK cost. VAT at the standard rate applies on import, and customs duty depends on the commodity classification of the goods; freight and insurance are added on top. So a list price in dollars excluding tax is the start of the calculation, not the end of it, and a UK buyer should budget the landed cost, not the sticker.

What are all the costs of running a quadruped robot?

Fourteen lines. A quotation that shows fewer is leaving some for you to discover. The table gives each line, what drives it, and whether any maker publishes a figure for it.

How much electricity does a robot dog use?

Very little, and it is the one running cost you can work out from a spec sheet. Unitree publishes the B2’s battery as 2,250 Wh (unitree.com, read on 22 September 2026), so a full charge from empty is 2.25 kWh before charger losses. At an illustrative 25 pence per kWh, that is about 56 pence per full charge; at 30 pence it is about 68 pence. A robot that charges twice a night is therefore spending a little over a pound a night on energy, whatever the tariff does. The X30 and ANYmal makers publish endurance but not capacity in watt-hours, and Spot’s specification sheet gives runtime rather than capacity, so the same sum cannot be done for them from public figures. Energy is a rounding error in this budget; the point of the calculation is to show that the costs that matter are elsewhere.

What does a quadruped cost per patrol?

Divide the annual cost of the deployment by the patrols it actually completes, and compare that with what the same coverage costs today. The structure is simple; the discipline is filling it with measured numbers rather than brochure ones.

  1. Annual capital cost: the landed price of robot, payload and dock divided over the years you expect to run it, or the annual subscription if on Robotics-as-a-Service.
  2. Annual running cost: software subscriptions, support contract, connectivity, expected battery and spares replacement, insurance and compliance renewals.
  3. Annual people cost: operator and supervision hours per patrol multiplied by patrols per year and the fully loaded hourly cost, plus training.
  4. Patrols completed per year: patrols per night, times nights, times the completion rate the pilot measured, not the one the brochure implied.
  5. Cost per patrol: the sum of the three annual costs divided by the patrols completed.
  6. The comparison: what the same coverage costs today, in guard hours, fixed cameras, call-outs or the inspections not done, and what a false alarm costs in operator time.

Three of those six numbers, completion rate, operator hours per patrol and false alarms, cannot be known from any specification and are the reason a pilot comes before a purchase. A pilot that measures them turns the structure above into a costed case; a purchase that assumes them turns it into a hope. That is what a structured pilot programme is for, and the routes to a trial without buying are in our guide to trialling a quadruped in the UK.

Is it cheaper to buy a robot dog or subscribe to one?

Outright purchase is the normal starting point and usually the cheaper route over several years once a task is proven and stable. A subscription, where the maker or a partner offers one, bundles hardware, support and updates into a monthly operating cost, which suits a first deployment, a fast-changing platform, a seasonal need or a budget that is operating rather than capital; it is rarely cheaper over the life of a stable deployment. Not every platform is offered on subscription in the UK, and the terms, what the fee covers, fair use, damage and early termination, decide the comparison more than the headline rate. Run the comparison after the pilot has told you what the robot actually delivers; Robotics-as-a-Service explained sets out the model.

Can grants reduce the cost of a quadruped robot?

Sometimes, for the project rather than the purchase. Innovation grants, R&D support and regional business schemes may contribute towards a suitable trial where the project is eligible. Eligibility depends on location, sector, applicant type, project stage, deadlines and the schemes open at the time, approval is at the funder’s discretion, and funding is never guaranteed, so it is assessed before a pilot is scoped rather than assumed into the budget. A grant finder such as Subvention can identify which schemes you may qualify for.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a robot dog cost in the UK?

Only Unitree publishes list prices: US$1,600 for the Go2 Air, US$2,800 for the Pro and US$4,500 for the X, excluding tax and freight, with the EDU on request (unitree.com, read on 22 September 2026); those are consumer and education platforms. The industrial class (Unitree B2, DEEP Robotics X30, Boston Dynamics Spot, ANYbotics ANYmal) is quoted per project and no maker publishes a UK price. VAT, duty, freight and insurance are added on import, and payload, dock, software, integration and support are usually separate lines.

What are the running costs of a quadruped robot?

Software and fleet subscriptions, a support contract, connectivity, battery and spares replacement, energy, operator and supervision time per patrol, training, insurance and compliance renewals, and integration maintenance. No maker publishes figures for most of these; the pilot measures the ones that matter most, completion rate, operator hours and false alarms.

How much electricity does a robot dog use?

Little. Unitree publishes the B2’s battery as 2,250 Wh, so a full charge is about 2.25 kWh before charger losses: roughly 56 pence at an illustrative 25 pence per kWh. Other makers publish endurance rather than capacity, so the sum cannot be done for them from public figures. Energy is a rounding error next to people, payload and support.

How do you calculate cost per patrol for a security robot?

Add the annual capital cost (landed robot, payload and dock spread over the years of use, or the subscription), the annual running cost (software, support, connectivity, spares, insurance, compliance) and the annual people cost (operator hours per patrol times patrols times fully loaded rate, plus training), then divide by the patrols actually completed per year. Compare with what the same coverage costs today, including the cost of false alarms.

Is a robot dog cheaper than a security guard?

It depends on the site, the route and the operating model, and no honest figure exists before a pilot. A robot patrols and reports; a person still verifies and responds, so the comparison is against the hours and coverage the robot actually takes over, not against a whole role. The pilot measures completion rate, operator time and false alarms; the calculation above turns those into a cost per patrol you can set against your current arrangement.

Does the price include the camera and the dock?

Usually not. On the industrial platforms the thermal and zoom camera is a payload (Spot Cam 2 on Spot) or a configuration (X30, B2), the dock is a separate item, and fleet software (Orbit on Spot) is a subscription. Ask for every line separately, and ask whether the payload is rated to the same ingress and temperature figures as the robot.
